Research
What the published literature examined
This compound has a real but small and dated human literature, mostly from the 1980s. A double-blind crossover study infused it into six healthy volunteers and reported a 59 per cent increase in sleep within a 130-minute interval against placebo, with delayed effects on the following night. Further small studies examined chronic insomnia, and a double-blind study in 16 chronic insomniacs found higher sleep efficiency and shorter latency but concluded the effects were weak, partly attributable to incidental changes in the placebo group, and that short-term administration was unlikely to be of major benefit. A separate pilot examined chronic pain episodes in seven people.
What is not established
Anything modern, and anything large. The human studies identified here run to single and low double figures of participants, are around forty years old, and used intravenous infusion rather than the route this presentation implies. The one double-blind study that reached a conclusion about benefit concluded against it. No approval exists anywhere and there is no labelled dose.
What distinguishes DSIP
It is the oldest evidence base in the catalogue, and the only compound here whose own double-blind study concluded against major benefit while the compound continued to be sold on the strength of the earlier, smaller, open results. The gap between the 1981 crossover result and the 1992 double-blind conclusion is the whole story of this molecule.
